And now…the longest 14 days in Sports

January 21, 2008

There is no longer period in the world than the fortnight that stands between the end of the NFL Conference championship games and the kickoff of the Super Bowl.  In what has to be some sort of karmic cycle we recieve some kind of inverted Red Sox/Yankees matchup with the Patriots playing the part of the Yankees evil empire and the Giants playing the part of the proud underdog who carry the hopes of a nation that pleads to be saved from an off season of crowing from the land of white chowder.

But for ME…it’s a bit personal.

I am the ex-husband of a Giants fan and my appreciation has thus far extended beyond the marriage itself.

The current Mrs. Ink is a NY native as well who has an intermittent soft spot for  the Giants.

The fact that I spent 11 yrs in the DC area rooting against the Redskins and am finishing up 3 years in Fort Worth rooting against the Cowboys hasn’t hurt my affinity for the G-Men.

So, in recognition of the 2007 NFC Champs, a few props.

Once upon a time,  Plaxico Burress was the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the official NFL team of the Inkognegro world.   He had good days and bad days with the Steelers, ultimately running afoul of the dominant portion of Steeler Nation, the part that treats Steeler football less like an enjoyable part of their life and more like a religious obsession.  Toss in the usual amount of cultural incompatibility and a few poorly timed dropped balls and you have the usual irrational hate.   After losing a home game to the Evil Empire in the 05 AFCCG, Plax went and got his $ from the NY Giants.   As a dedicated fan who knew that Burress would be a better pick than Chad Pennington for the Steelers, I have always appreciated his skills.

Today, Plex did the thing, bum ankle and all.  I hope Eli appreciates him.   He has saved Eli again and again.

Manning, Rivers, Rothlisberger.  These three, much like the class of 84 and the Class of 99, will be linked together forever.  Way back when Manning orchestrated his landing in NY, I was positive that Ben was the best of the three, followed by Rivers and THEN Eli.  Between his pedigree and the way he bullied his way into NY, I freely admit that I was amused by whatever struggles he had and I was always standing by, shovel in hand, waiting to smooth out the dirt over his football playing grave.  After tonight?  He gets a lifetime pass.

Still not better than Ben.  But his pass from me has been stamped.

I will not say a bad word about the long term prospects of Eli Manning ever again.

and Now….we wait.

Happy Belated Birthday James T. Smith

January 21, 2008

My favorite Raven fan dropped a post announcing that LL turned 40 on January 14.

He linked some videos and it occured to me. Those were probably my least favorite LL songs.

After a brief discussion, I decided to put my LL Discography to good use. I am going to drop my first podcast/mixtape/collection of songs before the end of the month. IF any of yall folk got recommendations for audio programs that I can use, let me know.

Good looking out, T.

Sherri Shepherd strikes again

January 20, 2008

So, now Sherri Shepherd, in her latest attempt to enlighten White folk to our culture has decided that Shirley Caesar is the Black Patti LaBelle

Errr.  Right.   Voulez Vous Hold my Mule?

You’re next in Line for a Lady Marmalade?

Sherri?  Just HOW is Shirley Caesar the Black Patti LaBelle?

The Black Grammys…The Black Patti LaBelle…What purpose does Sherri Shepherd serve on the View if she can’t adequately explain what the Stellar Awards are?

Oh. My bad. Silly me.

No Wonder Hillary didn’t want those papers out

January 18, 2008

While Hillary Clinton has been repeating endlessly she is the most experienced candidate the paper trail has been sorely lacking.

Well, Lookee here.

A “Confidential” May 26, 1993 memorandum
from Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) to Hillary Clinton entitled,
“Health Care Reform Communications,” which criticizes the Task Force as
a “secret cabal of Washington policy ‘wonks’” that has engaged in
“choking off information” from the public regarding health care
reform. The memorandum suggests that Hillary Clinton “use classic
opposition research” to attack those who were excluded by the Clinton
Administration from Task Force deliberations and to “expose lifestyles,
tactics and motives of lobbyists” in order to deflect criticism.
Senator Rockefeller also suggested news organizations “are anxious and
willing to receive guidance [from the Clinton Administration] on how to
time and shape their [news] coverage.”

Can’t wait to see the Right jump alllll over this one.

Memo To Mickey Kaus: If you don’t know…Just Ask

January 17, 2008

Much has been brought up about Mickey Kaus and his obsession with the Bradley Effect.

Black Bradley Effect? Noam Scheiber has speculated that black voters might tell pollsters one thing and do another in the South Carolina primary, just as (it’s theorized) white voters did in New Hampshire:

Is it possible that some black voters would tell pollsters they support Hillary (or that they’re undecided) because they don’t want to sound like they’re voting mainly out of racial solidarity, even though they actually intend to vote for Obama?

He could be right! But what if this black Bradley Effect operates in the other direction–black voters tell pollsters they are going to vote for Obama (because they feel that’s expected of them) and then vote for Hillary or Edwards? In other words, they behave exactly like the white voters in the Standard Bradley Effect. That would take some of the sting out of the implicit charge of “racism” that always lurks underneath the Bradley Effect, no? … Of the two possibilities, I’d guess the latter is more likely. Are African-Ameican voters really worried that they’ll “sound like they’re voting out of racial solidarity”?** I’d think fear of being considered a self-hater or Oreo (or practitioner of “middleclassness“!) looms larger in most black communities, unfortunately. But I don’t know. … P.S.: Of course, it’s possible neither effect will materialize, and it’s also possible they will cancel each other out. …

Mickey, if you actually TALKED to Black folk, you would know that POLLS DON’T ASK US ANYTHING.

And if they did call us, we wouldn’t answer because we all have caller ID.

I wash my hands of this entire mess. I am Done.

January 14, 2008

Do not shit on me and tell me you brought me chocolate.

When you trotted out Billy Shaheen I was amused.

When you had Mark Penn bust the ill subliminal I was annoyed.

When you took the feed from Magic Johnson I was amused, but slightly irritated.

When you dusted off Bob Kerrey I was genuinely disturbed.

When Bill Clinton got his Auntie Anne on with Obama’s war record, I was insulted.

When you kinda sorta choked back tears (or not) I…was pretty indifferent.  Even though you seemed to stop sniffling to act like the country would implode if someone other than you took the walk down Pennsylvania Avenue for the Oath of Office on 1/20/09

When you won New Hampshire, I charged it to the game and hoped we could now get on  to a good substantive campaign.

But then Hillary “found her voice”…

and she used it turn this campaign into a farce.

a. Farce.

Don’t believe me?

Then explain the appearance of ROBERT JOHNSON at a WOMEN’S COLLEGE to introduce Hillary Clinton where he SHAMELESSLY re-invokes all manner of coded racial symbolism.

The irony.

The audacity.

The mufuggin nerve.

Finit.

I’m done.

And you mothafuggas runnnin around talking about I am imagining shit?

Fuck that.

I am finished.

I will not cast a vote for any Clinton for ANY office.  I don’t give a fuck WHO the GOP nominee is.

Huckabee?  I’d vote for him over Hillary…in a second.

McCain?  I would ponder it…

Anyone else…I will vote for some other stuff and write in Barack Obama.

I got through 8 years of Bush and I am actually better off, no thanks to HIM.

I took this personally, because you made it personal

So, to all you Clinton supporters and desperate Lefties who wanna win SOOOO bad that you turn a blind eye to this foolishness in the name of winning the White House I say this.

For your sake, I hope it was worth it.

Because I am pretty sure you will wish we didn’t know the truth about you when you see what happens next.

The double Edge sword that is The Wire

January 14, 2008

Last night’s episode of the Wire apparently didn’t feature nearly enough genocide for some folk.

While I will admit that some of the newspaper business can be a bit preachy and nostalgic, the truth is probably even more preachy and makes you pine even more for the past, only with more people of color.

What disturbs me, though, is how these esteemed TV reviewers are mentally fast-forwarding through the back story and carnage of the regular joes while focusing on the gangsterlicious histrionics.

Makes you wonder how much people are really LEARNING from The Wire’s version of “reality television”

The conversation between Michael, Chris and Snoop is a seminal moment in television which flows seamlessly into Michael reaching a critical turning point in his rise (descent?) in the game.

But David Plotz wants to focus on Avon Barksdale and his W?

Fuggoutttaherewithdatbullshit.

But I do agree that we need more Clay Davis.

I just realized what Clinton v. Obama is missing…

January 13, 2008

Clay Davis (oh…NSFW)

BTW…The Wire is actually MORE depressing than this campaign.

Bob Johnson does it Big.

January 13, 2008

I hope Billy Shaheen and Mark Penn were taking notes…cause THIS, boys and girls…is how it’s done.

So, just to recap, for those of you aren’t quite sure what you just saw:

Robert Johnson, Billionaire owner of the Charlotte Bobcats and founder of that repository of positive female imaging, BET, made an appearance at Columbia College, a women’s school in South Carolina and talked about how insulted he is by the way Barack Obama’s campaign has shamelessly played the race card.  He also asserted that Bill and Hillary have worked tirelessly for Black folk and would NEVER say anything negative about Dr. King or his legacy, while Barack Obama was in the Neighborhood doing….whatever his book said he was doing (*wink*)

So THIS is how she’s gonna campaign in South Carolina?

My first instinct is to say we have reached rock bottom…but somehow I think the floor is still rushing up at us.

God Help us all.
